Originally announced as Christchurch United FC, New Zealand’s second entry in the OFC Pro League will now compete as South Island United, a reflection of the club’s commitment to represent the whole south island as its first-ever professional football club.

Christchurch United FC will continue to compete in the Southern and National Leagues respectively, in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Whilst football has a rich history in the south island of Aotearoa, to date the only two professional teams the country has produced have both been based in the north island; Auckland FC and Wellington Phoenix.

“It is our goal to truly represent the entire football community in the South Island and provide a pathway to professional football for all young players in the South,” says the club’s General Manager Ryan Edwards.

“It was always our intention to be a South Island club and to achieve that we have started discussions with Mainland Football, Football South and all the clubs on how we can best work together to create the best team to represent our region.”

The new OFC Pro League is one of the most exciting projects in world football and who would not want to be part of that.
- Rob Sherman, South Island United Coach

The challenges of building a professional team in such a short space of time cannot be understated but South Island United have already made a shrewd appointment when it comes to their head coach.

Former Fiji national team coach and New Zealand Football Director of Football, Rob Sherman will take the reins for the newly established club, with the Welshman excited at the prospect of being part of the OFC Pro League.

“The new OFC Pro League is one of the most exciting projects in world football and who would not want to be part of that.”
